Outdoor Cooking!

Ash Cakes

Ash cake batter:

2 cups all purpose flour

1 cup self-rising corn meal
1 cup regular corn meal
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup sugar
less than 2 cups water
Gluten Free Ash Cake Batter:

2 cups corn meal (1 c self rising, 1 cup plain)
2 cups all purpose Gluten Free flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar
Directions:

Gradually mix in 1 cup of water, then carefully dribble in more water (probably not more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup more), stirring it in continuously.  You should add just enough water to turn the flour into dough (similar to raw pizza dough, or slightly drier).  If you add too much water it will be sticky - embers will stick to it and it will not cook well.  If this happens, you can improve it by adding more flour.
