Topics:
Fire by Friction - I demonstrate how to light a fire by friction, using a bow drill and natural fiber tinder. This can also be done as a group activity, where students work the bow. Best done outdoors or in well-ventilated space, as there will be some smoke and flame.
Mammals - Skulls - tracks - movement
Students will look at a number of skulls from local mammals, and learn about how they move, and about their tracks. If we have enough room, students can try to moving like different kinds of mammals.

Practical plants - There are a number of common plants in our area that every student should know. I teach poison ivy vs. lookalikes, medicinal common plantain, 3 berry plants, and one common edible green that kids love.
Natural fibers - I demonstrate how to obtain fiber from local plants, how to process them into rope or fire-starter (tinder). This can also include techniques for lighting tinder (bow-drill, fire-steel, magnifying glass). And students can also learn/practice tying the very useful clove hitch.
Survival shelter - I explain the vital importance of shelter, and how to make one out of sticks and leaves, and also what to carry in a pack for emergencies. Depending on age, this can include some of the physics of heat transfer and/or some story-telling.
